Heikkilä finished fifth in WRC2 in the eventful WRC Sweden

Mikko Heikkilä has finished fifth in WRC Sweden’s WRC2 category. Heikkilä’s international debut did not meet the expectations, but the pace was shown with multiple top 3 stage times as well as a stage win.

TGS Motorsport driver Mikko Heikkilä and co-driver Kristian Temonen have finished the second round of the world championship, WRC Sweden, in fifth position in WRC2 behind the wheel of a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2. Heikkilä had been in contention for podium in WRC2, but issues during Saturday costed the Toyota driver time. In Sunday, it was about finishing in the first international rally of Finn’s 2024 season in style – with a good push.

-We tried pushing as hard as we can today. The second stage of the day was good and we were on the same seconds as the leaders. There was a moment at the opening stage of Sunday as we had a spin in a fast left hand bend. Luckily nothing was broken and we were able to continue, Heikkilä recapped.

Heikkilä’s WRC Sweden did not go according to expectations, even though there were positives to take home from Umeå too.

-The main feeling right now is disappointment. Our goal was to finish on the podium as well as to be the leading WRC2 Toyota. The goal was realistic, but we had a lot of extra hassles throughout the rally. Unfortunately we spent Friday testing as our pre-event tests did not succeed and that was something beyond control. Saturday was good and we won a stage as well, but the puncture and couple of not so good stages grew the gap to the competitors in front, Heikkilä said.

WRC Sweden was not originally included in Heikkilä’s competitive program for 2024 but a big effort from Heikkilä, his team, and his partners made the international snow rally debut possible.

-A massive thanks again to all our partners to be able to compete here. The results was regrettably not quite what we set out to achieve, but our time will come. Now we’ll begin to make preparations for the upcoming ERC season, Heikkilä ends.
