Mikko Heikkilä has won his second Italian Gravel Rally Championship event by winning the 52. San Marino Rally. Winning the fourth round of the championship with a margin of 16.4 seconds, Heikkilä backed up his victory in the opening round of the series.
Mikko Heikkilä and co-driver Kristian Temonen have won the 52. San Marino Rally held in San Marino. The Finn competed in the fourth round of the Italian Gravel Rally Championship with Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 fielded by the Italian team Step Five Motorsport. The winning margin after nine special stages was 16.4 seconds.
-This is a nice way of celebrating the Finnish holiday Midsummer. I feel like I wasn’t performing quite at my best today, but I’m happy it was enough for the victory. It’s been a struggle for the past two events in the Italian championship, but I’m glad today turned out for the better for us, Heikkilä said.
The Michelin-driver won four out of nine stages contested. The technical gravel roads of San Marino also granted good additional experience for future rallies.
-We got quite a good base setup for the rally and the car and team were performing flawlessly, so a big thank you to Step Five. The stages were amazing, quite slow and technical overall, and gave out good experience from these kinds of stages. It was surprisingly slippery throughout the rally, even after the stages were cleaned up they still stayed quite slippery. Nevertheless a great event overall and some good experience from these types of roads, Heikkilä reflected.
Mikko Heikkilä’s competitive season continues with ERC Rally Estonia on 5th to 7th of July.
